Modest Beginnings
Pukekura races did not begin in the Pukekura Raceway. The first race ever held in New Zealand was in Taranaki on January 1st 1849. From these humble beginnings, the horse racing events of today can be traced. Looking back through history, starting with that first day, it is evident that the visionaries of yesteryear left a legacy of great racing that continues to be strived for. After that first event, it was a few more years until the official Taranaki Jockey Club was established in 1876. This is the forerunner of the Pukekura Raceway that hosts all the Pukekura races.
The name of Taranaki Jockey Club held until 1999, when the name was changed to the Taranaki Racing Club. Also at this time, it was declared that there would be a public competition to name the racing clubs new racetrack in New Plymouth. The track was named Pukekura Raceway which was named after the adjacent world renowned Pukekura Park.

Today’s Super Raceway
In 2009 more changes were made to be able to present what is now a state of the art Pukekura Raceway for hosting the Pukekura races. The Taranaki Racing Club joined forces with the Opunake Racing Club to form the new Taranaki Thoroughbred Racing. Together they spend millions in renovating and bringing forth some of the best training and racing facilities in New Zealand, and perhaps in the world.
The actual Pukekura Raceway is a flat raceway that is a 1600 metre oval that is not an overly wide track. In fact, it does offer some very wild racing as the horses go into the first corner. The track has a 375 straight away where the thoroughbreds themselves can get up to speed before heading into the narrow, tight turns. Historically, the front runners receive the most pressure during the home stretch as the horses in the rear begin to sweep in after the 600 metre mark.
Pukekura Races
The Taranaki Thoroughbred Racing club has hosts two premier events each year out of their 15 event schedule. The first being the Hooker Pacific Taranaki Cup day in February. This event draws horses from around the country and has a tremendous purse for the winner. The other of the premier Pukekura races is the Waikato Stud Opunake Cup day in July.
